Gregorei Alexandrovich was a Russian politician who lived from 1739 to 1791. He was one of the conspirators who dethroned Peter III in favour of Catherine II, he became a gentleman of the bedchamber, 1762. In the war against Turkey, 1771, was made a lieutenant-general. Was responsible for the partition of Poland in 1772, and conquest of the Crimea in 1783 (involving the massacre of 30,000 Tartars). Declared war against Turkey in 1787, and captured Ochakov in 1788. His apparent handsome appearance earned him the name of Russian Alcibiades.
